Elevators, like people, are “sensitive to heat and cold”. Every winter, there will be a rise in the number of elevator failures. The national standard stipulates that the temperature of the elevator room is between 5-40℃, so that the equipment can run well. When the actual temperature is lower than the standard value, it is easy to cause the elevator operation noise increase, abnormal sound or jitter, sensitivity reduction and other situations. The power failure caused by voltage instability caused by low temperature is easy to cause elevator trouble.


What effect does temperature have on elevator operation? One key factor is the “chimney effect”.

Chimney effect refers to the indoor temperature is higher than the outdoor temperature, indoor hot air density is small, along the vertical channel naturally rises, through the door and window gaps and various holes from the upper part of the seepage, outdoor cold air density is large, from the low level infiltration to supplement the indoor and outdoor air temperature difference.

The chimney effect of the elevator refers to that in the elevator shaft, the temperature outside the shaft is lower than the temperature inside the shaft, and the air will flow upward along the space of the shaft. The cold air outside enters the elevator shaft through the building doors and Windows and the elevator hall door, and forms convection with the hot air inside the shaft, resulting in the pressure difference between the shaft and the elevator hall outside.


The possible effect of chimney effect on elevator operation

Easy to cause the opening and closing fault

The elevator door is sensitive to pressure difference, and the convection of cold and hot air is easy to make the pressure difference on both sides of the elevator door is too large, so that the operation of the elevator door is blocked, resulting in the opening and closing fault of the elevator door, resulting in the normal operation of the elevator, and easy to lead to personnel trapped elevator events.


Produce vibration resulting in abnormal sound

When the air convection inside and outside the well passage passes through the gap of the layer door, it vibrates and produces abnormal sound. At the same time, chimney-effect air and moving parts in the well (such as the car) around the abnormal sound may also be produced.

It creates turbulence and causes the car to shake

When the high-speed air flow and the elevator move towards each other, serious turbulence can be generated in the elevator car up and down, resulting in the car running comfort reduction or even shaking.


So how to ensure the safe operation of the main elevator in winter? Winter especially for the gear tractor, do the following routine maintenance is essential.


First, the main engine oil inspection

1. Check the oil mark on the main engine box. If the oil level is lower than the scale line, please add lubricating oil in time

2. Check the oil status, whether after the main engine is used for a long time, the cleanliness of the lubricating oil is not enough, the metal impurities are more, if so, the lubricating oil needs to be replaced.

2. Check the abnormal sound of the tractor

Place the head of a screwdriver on the surface of the traction machine when the elevator is running normally, and lean your ear against the handle of the screwdriver. Listen to the internal noise of the traction machine during operation. If there is any noise, contact professional technicians immediately for maintenance.

Three, brake system inspection

1, check the brake temperature rise: generally touch the brake surface with the hand, the hand is not directly scalded by the surface temperature, basic hands can also tolerate, at this time the surface temperature should be about 55℃; If the temperature is too high, immediately stop the ladder maintenance;

2. Tighten the wiring in the brake junction box; Open the cover of the junction box and tighten the inlet wire and terminal connection with a flat-head screwdriver.

3, check the brake pin parts should be good, flexible and reliable action.

Four, brake components inspection

1. During the maintenance and operation of the elevator, first adjust the slight friction between the brake shoe and the brake wheel, and then tighten the spare cap of the adjusting bolt when the adjusting bolt is rotated until there is no friction sound; After adjustment, the clearance of the lock brake should be between 0.20 and 0.30mm;

2, brake shoe wear should not be more than 2mm; The brake shoe should be replaced when the thickness is less than 6mm;

3. Check and clean the brake core regularly;

4. Cut off the main power supply to ensure that there is no one in the elevator, and the elevator car is in a safe position. Manually loosen the brake wrench and observe whether the lock brake is blocked. When the elevator is running normally, remove the loose brake wrench and place it properly.


In order to prevent the elevator equipment accident caused by a large drop in temperature, here is a reminder:


The management unit of elevator use should strengthen inspection, pay attention to close the doors and Windows of the machine room, and do a good job of cleaning the rain and snow inside and outside the elevator car. It is recommended to stop using the open escalator in rain and snow weather and do a good warning and isolation to prevent the occurrence of injuries such as slipping and falling. At the same time, the anti-freezing protection of water supply pipes such as fire hoses should be strengthened to prevent water from flowing into the elevator shaft after the pipes crack and causing equipment damage, so as to ensure the safety of citizens riding the ladder.


The maintenance unit shall make a plan for the safety protection and rescue of the maintenance personnel, ensure the normal operation of the elevator maintenance work, and timely eliminate the potential dangers caused by low temperature, rain, snow and freezing weather.
